Are You Myth-ing Something?

ARE YOU MYTH-ING SOMETHING?

By: Julie Souza Bradley Lilly

Since Genesis 3:8, biblical history recounts the depth of love of the Father for His children, as He watches and waits for us to repent and return to Him.  The Father went to extraordinary lengths to purchase our salvation.  Now, depending upon the level of rebellion in our hearts, the Lord will either draw us to be reconciled to Him through blessing or by way of discipline.  Both come from the heart of our loving Father who wants no one to perish.

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” – Psalm‬ ‭91:1-2‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Ever have one of those nights when you wake up for no apparent reason and can’t get back to sleep? I had one of those earlier this week.
and grabbed my phone to do a word search in an attempt to lure sleep. The topic was “Mythology.” I found “Elves,” “Fairies” and “Leprechauns.”  But I was dumbfounded that the next word to be found was, “Angels.”

It bothered me that angels were lumped in with nonsense.  I looked up “myth” in the dictionary. It said, “a religious or cultural tradition about a person, institution or situation, especially when exaggerated or fictitious.”

Psalm 91 just then came to mind. It is a beautiful depiction of the Lord’s care and protection of those who seek Him and rest in the shadow of His wings.

“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;” – Psalm 91:11.

Faith in the invisible has become viewed by many as foolishness. Yet every one of us relies upon faith every day. We have faith that the sun will rise, that gravity will stick us to the planet and our chair will support us. We have faith that there will be oxygen to fill our lungs and that there are millions of planets in the universe, though no one has ever seen one.

We have flawless faith about certain things, yet we doubt the things of God. When we consider angels fictitious, it isn’t a giant leap to relegate the rest of Psalm 91 also to mythology. We begin to doubt His care for us, then His awareness of us and finally His existence at all.

Beloved, the enemy doesn’t care if we believe in gravity or tomorrow’s sunrise. He does, however, have a vested interest in bringing doubt to mind about things that stand as obstacles to his plan to steal, kill and destroy.

He would have us believe that angels don’t exist and that God does not care about us. He wrings his hands with delight when we entertain hopelessness, and he takes us on wild tangents of faith-crushing fantasy. He wants us to believe that things are beyond hope, will never change and that God is dead.

The Word of God, in its entirety, is truth.  It is God-breathed (2 Tim 3:16). And God does not lie (Num 23:19).  Every truth and promise, in context, are more reliable than the rising of the sun, the oxygen in the air.

Heavenly Father, we come before You. We look at our level of fear and anxiety and can see that the thoughts we have been entertaining are consistent with believing that the promises in Your Word are not truth, but myths we have told ourselves.

We struggle to believe You, because we have accepted the whispers from the weaver of lies as truth, instead of the truth of Your Word. Forgive us, Lord, for believing him and for, in essence, calling You a liar.

Heal our broken faith and twisted beliefs.  Excise the myths. Teach us to read the Word in context, so we do not misuse it to say something that it is not. Because truth taken out of context is a tool of the enemy, causing many to fall away, disillusioned.

We fan the flames of our hope. Lord, we take back every truth that the enemy has stolen. May they be our rock and foundation, replacing myth with truth. In Jesus’ Name ❤️

Dear friend, have you taken the enemy’s bait? Have you been lured away from the shelter of the wings of the Almighty by following breadcrumbs of doubt? Why not come before Him and ask Him to rebuild your foundation? 💡
