Frankenstein Faith

 FRANKENSTEIN FAITH

“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” - 2 Timothy 4:3-4

This verse strikes me this morning and I wonder what I might be believing that isn’t truth.  I wonder which pieces of fact and fantasy I have pieced together to fashion a monster of my own design that I worship, instead of the One true God.

Many years ago, I was chatting with a friend and I mentioned a quote that I attributed to the “Good Book,” only to be informed that I was quoting Aristotle, not the Bible.  It was embarrassing, but also a faithful wound of a friend (Pro 27:6). It set me on a more diligent course of truly knowing the Word instead of falling into a cultural norm of believing myths.

The more I dig into the Word, the more I can see that there are phrases that we attribute to the Bible that aren’t in the Bible.  Other phrases that ARE in the Bible are taken out of context, twisting truth into lies. Then we take these twisted beliefs and blame God for not keeping promises that He never made.

Disappointment with God, for not keeping the promises we have fabricated, then leads us to question promises the Lord actually has made.  We are left with a Frankenstein faith, pieced together from the living Word of God, foolish wisdom of man (1 Cor 3:19) and lies that lead to death.

We are left confused, disappointed and unstable on our feet.  The shaky foundation of our pieced-together faith does not provide a solid place on which to stand.  And without faith it is impossible to please God (Heb 11:6).

Father, we come before You.  We ask that You would take us back to the Word of God—take us down to the foundation, the Cornerstone.  Strip away the lies and death— things we believe You are saying that You aren’t—and the notes that we have tucked between the pages that are myths that we have embraced, because they justify our behavior.  Rebuild our faith, Lord, from the foundation up.  In Jesus’ Name  ❤️

Dear friend, is your faith struggling, because God has not followed through on what you believe He has promised?  God will always come through.  He is not a man that He should lie (Num 23:19).  Which scripture are you using as your foundation?  Have you read the chapters both before and after the verse, so the words are taken in context?  Who was the promise made to?  Knowing the full truth, in context, is a major key to wisdom, strong faith and avoiding unnecessary disappointments. 💡
