HOME IMPROVEMENT

“On hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." – Mark 2:17.

I love a good home renovation show.  A master carpenter goes into a home that is in disrepair, and then transforms an eyesore into an inviting oasis.  Somehow through the dry rot, peeling paint and tight spaces, the carpenter can see beyond the clutter and decay to envision something of remarkable value and beauty.

I love those programs, because they feel so hopeful.  I need hope, because much like these neglected homes, I, too, am a mess.

How about you?

Romans 3:23 brings a comforting and equalizing truth.  We are not alone, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” We all have made messes, if not disasters, of our lives.

The Father is not waiting for us to clean ourselves up before coming before Him.  Jesus didn’t come for the perfect and pristine, but rather the lost, the sick and the broken, poor beggars, outcasts and the forgotten.

It is by no mistake that Jesus was a carpenter (Mark 6:3).  He knows how to fix, repair and rebuild.  He came for messes like me and you—those who recognize that apart from a divine intervention, we are beyond hope and ready for the wrecking ball.  He came to be hope for us, and to take our sickness and brokenness upon Himself.

But He won’t bulldoze His way in, beloved. He won’t begin making changes without our approval.  He is a gentleman, and He awaits our invitation.

No matter how it feels, you are not beyond repair.  Nothing is too difficult for Him.  Our master carpenter has a beautiful plan in mind for you—a future and glorious hope (Jer 29:11). He looks, with delight, beyond your brokenness to see who you are called to be.

With rolled up sleeves and tools in hand, He is ready, willing (Luke 5:13) and able to begin the work of transformation.  What He begins He is faithful to complete (Phil 1:6).  And He stands at your door and knocks today (Rev 3:20).  The question is, will you open the door and let Him in?
