Wishing On Dandelions

WISHING ON DANDELIONS

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 15:13

Change is on the horizon for all of us.  Some changes are eagerly awaited, while the mere thought of others fills us with dread.

If you are anything like me, we scurry around in anxiety, trying to make sure we have all of our ducks in a row.  On the surface it may appear that we are behaving wisely and responsibly to prepare. However, it is underlying anxiety and fear that bubble up that often drive our diligence.

We tend to put faith in the security of our job or 401K, our spouse, education or political party. We put our faith in ourselves and our capabilities.

The trouble with putting our faith in people and things, is they are imperfect and fallible.  They change and falter.  We lose our job, the stock market crashes or illness knocks on our door.  And when they do, we panic.

We are not alone. It is the age-old story of mankind that goes back to temptation in the Garden, when Adam and Eve were tempted with the forbidden fruit:

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” – Genesis‬ ‭3:4-5‬ ‭

From the third chapter of Genesis, until this very moment, the enemy has been tempting mankind to foolishly shift our faith and reliance away from God and onto ourselves, our circumstances or things.

Countless times we are offered the bait—to step off of our sure foundation to a shaky one, with the promise that in so doing, we will be like God.

Being responsible is wise, but healthy responsibility is not tied to anxiety. Anxiety shines a spotlight of revelation on the human heart.

Anxiety and fear cannot coexist with faith.

Our anxiety reveals that we want more than to simply be responsible. We want to be prepared to be our own savior, just in case God doesn’t show up to rescue us.

Read that again.

“Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?” – Luke 12:25-26

Like wishing on dandelions, it is foolishness to put our faith anywhere except squarely in the hands of God.

“‘The LORD is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I hope in Him!’”– Lamentations 3:24

Father, forgive us for our hubris in wanting to sit with You on the throne of our lives. Give us ears to hear Your voice. We need Your help to learn quick obedience, and then to step aside and let You be God—allow You to be the Savior and the hero of the story.

It is such a relief to drop the weight of our anxieties at the foot of the cross.  You alone are God.  We love You. And we invest the full weight of our trust in Your faithfulness, power and goodness to work all things together for our good (Rom 8:28). In Jesus’ Name ❤️
