When Silence Is Golden
WHEN SILENCE IS GOLDEN
By: Julie Souza Bradley Lilly
“Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.” – Matthew 27:13-14 NIV
Have you every wondered why Jesus was silent when He went before Pilate and the charges were read against Him? For the longest time it perplexed me why the sinless Son of God wouldn’t stand up for Himself, call down His angels and put these puny humans in their places. But He didn’t.
The silence of Jesus fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy:
“He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.” – Isaiah 53:7 NIV
It wasn’t weakness that kept Jesus silent. On the contrary, His silence displayed meekness —a powerful display of controlled strength. We make a great mistake to confuse meekness with weakness. Spiritual meekness is strength in humble submission to the will of God. Jesus’ silence spoke volumes, and He was rewarded with the highest place (Philippians 2:9) — a fitting fulfillment of God’s promise, that it is the meek who will inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5).
God is not asking for us to be passive wimps, Beloved, but rather, strong, submitted and obedient warriors that can be entrusted with the rewards of His kingdom. Are you ready to reap the rewards of a divinely held tongue? Pray with me.
Father, give us wisdom in this season. Fill us with Your Spirit, so we will have power to rein in our tongues. Teach us to silence our flesh, so our words will be solely in keeping with Your will. And when the moment comes to speak, embolden us to stand firm and speak truth with humility, courage and wisdom. May our meek words be divinely inspired, scattering the powers of darkness with the rightly divided Word of God.
Lord, direct our words. And may we reap the rewards of meekness when silence is golden. In Jesus’ Name ❤️
