A Prayer For The Lonely

A PRAYER FOR THE LONELY

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” - Deuteronomy 31:6

We don’t have to be the only one in a room to feel alone.  We can be in a coliseum full of people and still feel lonely, because we feel alone in our skin.  Scripture’s wisdom encourages us to not forsake meeting together as a church (Hebrews 10:25), which is a tremendous blessing.  But it is only an internal companionship that will keep us from feeling loneliness in that packed coliseum.  We are created to live in community with one another and also in ongoing relationship with the Lord.

Father, we come before You.  Your Word says that where two or more are gathered in Your Name, You are there in the midst of them (Matt 18:20).  Even though we may be miles apart, in the Spirit there is no distance.  So Lord, as in Acts 19:12 when Paul sent a blessed handkerchief to the sick and they were healed, likewise, across time and space I take hands with Your precious child reading this, by way of this prayer.

Together we bow before You and admit that we need You.  We invite Your presence with thanksgiving and praise. We thank You that Your heart toward us is tender, and Your compassion and grace far exceed our need. We thank You for Your unsurpassed love that covers every sin.

Lord, we all can feel lonely or alone, whether in our life or in a circumstance.  Even Jesus knew the grief of feeling abandoned and forsaken.  We ask that You would invade our pain, our hurt and our loss.  We invite You into our illnesses with the healing power of Your presence and peace.

Comfort us in our aloneness.  Hold us close to Your side.  Minister healing to our aching hearts and hurting bodies.  Holy Spirit wash away anxiety and fearfulness, the pain, loneliness and emptiness.  Make Yourself known to us in this moment and bring renewed hope, peace and trust and a comforting sense of belonging.

We all long to be truly known, and to feel like we matter in a world where we can sometimes feel invisible.  Satisfy this hunger to be known, accepted and cherished with Your perfect love.  Show us that we not only belong, but we are wanted and hold great value.

We open our hearts and lives to Your Spirit.  Saturate us with Your presence.  We unlock the doors behind which we hide our brokenness and sin.  We invite You in to be Lord of all.  We hand You the keys, that there will be no part of us that remains hidden from You.

Come and live in us.  Be our constant, comforting companion.  In that communion of unceasing prayer (1 Thess 5:17), may we come into richness of fellowship with You; may we come to fully know You as we are fully known.

Lord, we thank You that You are not only our Father, but also our closest friend. In that intimacy, may we find rest.  We ask for an awareness of Your presence, and that our soul will find satisfaction in knowing that we never walk alone.  We walk with You.  In Jesus’ Name ❤️
