X-Ray Vision & Mustard Seeds

X-RAY VISION & MUSTARD SEEDS

When I was young, I absolutely loved comic books.  I would pore over the pages, and once finished, I would flip to the back and discover the fantastic treasures available there.  My favorite was the X-Ray glasses.  Are you old enough to remember those?  How cool it would have been to slip on glasses and be able to see inside of things.

I was never able to buy a pair, but I can imagine the children who did, and were disappointed to find it was merely a gimmick to remove pennies from their pockets.

We learned when we are young, that many of the things we held to be true, in fact, were not.  And in defense, we attempted to prevent disappointment, by viewing life through a skeptical lens. Skeptical lenses tend to not be selective, and we can eventually view everything through their altered perspective.

Then we open the Bible.  Within its pages, we read of miracles and the promises of God.  We scrutinize what we read and accept what appears plausible, while discarding those that do not.  It can make us feel like “grown ups,” to think we are able to discern truth from deception.

Reading the Word through those lenses can be a stumbling block, however, because the Word of God taken in context, is reliable truth. We miss out on wonder and even the miraculous, when the offered blessings of God remain unmet by our trust—our mustard seed of faith remains in the packet and never gets planted.

“He replied, ‘If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.’” – Luke 17:6 NIV

As we age, we can both gain and lose wisdom, if we are not careful.

“And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’” –  Matthew 18:3 NIV.

Lord, give us hearts like that of little children—not a childish faith that is poorly placed, but childlike faith that plunges its full weight in the goodness of our Heavenly Father.  Give us eyes to see everyday miracles, and minds that can conceive of Your plans.  May we plant everywhere You point and see it take root.  And may it’s growth enlarge our faith to believe for the hopeful, miraculous future You have in store (Jer 29:11).  In Jesus’ Name ❤️

The Bible is no comic book, beloved.  Are there pages within its cover that you avoid for fear of disappointment?  Are you missing out on miracles by keeping to the “safe” pages that appear unrelated to your life, and require no exercise of your faith? 💡
