The Dead Sea

THE DEAD SEA
By: Julie Souza Bradley Lilly
The Dead Sea is dying. Serial overhead photographs demonstrate what has been suspected for years—one of the lowest and saltiest of places on Earth is drying up.
This landlocked body of water is fed by the Jordan River and a scant 2.5 inches of annual rainfall. Making matters worse, water resources have been diverted from the Jordan River and there is very little outflow from the Sea itself. As a result, the Dead Sea is so salty, that the only thing able to thrive in its waters is bacteria. If things remain unchanged, the Dead Sea will one day cease to exist.
Our lives can be like the Dead Sea. When we primarily only receive, but fail to adequately release back out what we have been given, we, too, can become toxic. Our once flourishing walk can become stagnant and eventually kill the life within it.
It has been encouraging lately to see selfless people stepping up to the plate to serve others. Homemakers and even inmates in prison are making masks for children and healthcare workers who are in harms way. Others are delivering food and supplies to the most vulnerable and, dare I say, some are even willing to “share a square” of toilet paper.
They may be tired when their heads hit the pillow, but it’s a good tired —a feeling of satisfaction for having served others. We were created to serve, and to allow blessing to flow through us on the way to others. That flow prevents stagnation and allows for life to flourish.
Beloved, does your spirit feel dry? In a time of scarcity, it is tempting to hold tightly to what little we have. Perhaps it is time to expand your outlet. Scripture encourages us:
“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
Proverbs 11:25 NIV
Father, may we be the hands and feet of Jesus. Teach us to serve one another. Flow through us to bring living water to parched souls and new life to barren land. Use us to pour out refreshing, and in the process may we find that we have also been refreshed. In Jesus’ Name ❤️
