Little White Lies

LITTLE WHITE LIES

By:  Julie Souza Bradley Lilly

“The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful; they fail to act wisely or do good.” - Psalm 36:3

Every day, it seems, we encounter lies.  Some are clearly bogus.  Others are cleverly disguised, using fear, greed or gossip in an attempt to lure us to spread them. Most of us have received that call from “tech support” offering to fix our computer, or announcing we have won a contest which was never entered.  We have an obligation to investigate these claims and not just take them at face value.  Those downstream from us trust us to be truthful.  And failure to do our due diligence can turn us into unintentional liars.

Adam and Eve believed a little lie in the Garden, disastrously changing the course of human history.  The same serpent slithers in our garden, beloved. He designs cunning deceptions that strive to skirt detection, in an attempt to gain a foothold —solicitations, offhand comments, gossip, stander and whispers from the past which attempt to revisit our present.

They may appear small and harmless, but “little white lies” are not insignificant.  They are tools of death.  And when we spread them, we partner with the enemy in furthering the kingdom of darkness.

The Lord HATES, “a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.” - Proverbs 6:19.  The Word warns, “No one who practices deceit will dwell in my house; no one who speaks falsely will stand in my presence.” - Psalm 101:7.

Lord give us discerning ears and a bridle for our tongues.  Father, forgive us for falling prey to and foolishly spreading gossip and lies.  Help us to not fall prey to deception, but to stop it in its tracks.  Save us from lying lips, both those of the enemy and our own, that You can count us as trustworthy.  And may our faithfulness to the truth bring You joy, and serve as proof that we can be entrusted with greater blessing.  In Jesus’ Name ❤️
