Seeds of Promise

SEEDS OF PROMISE

By: Julie Souza Bradley Lilly

“See how farmers wait for their precious crops to grow. They wait patiently for fall and spring rains. You, too, must be patient. Don’t give up hope.” – James‬ ‭5:7-8‬ ‭GW‬‬

Have you ever been to Butchart Gardens in British Columbia?  They are the most spectacular gardens I have ever seen.  After one visit, I excitedly brought home several packets of flower seeds.  I pictured our yard bursting with the same colorful blooms that were pictured on the seed packets.

Years went by, but not a single flower ever bloomed.  You might think I had purchased bad seeds, or that the seeds were incompatible with our climate.  But the truth is the seeds never made it into the ground. They remained full of promise, but I hadn’t done the work of planting and tending to them.

God makes promises, too.  His seeds of promise are pregnant with life and beauty.  We may receive them with joy, but sometimes our preoccupation with life prevents us from ever planting them in our hearts.

Others seeds we plant, but forget to water, feed, or remove the weeds around them.  And when we compare what we see with the picture we were given, we are disappointed that our garden bears little resemblance to what was promised.

Are you disappointed with your garden, Beloved?  Did a promise of God fail to spring to life?  Pray with me.

Father, Your Word says,

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” – Proverbs 13:12 NIV

We bring our discouragements and disappointments. Show us if we have forgotten a step of planting, feeding, watering or weeding. Help us to do our part in nurturing and tending to the seeds we have been given.

And if we have done it all, but still see no growth, send rain!  Encourage us to not grow weary (Gal 6:9), but to be patient and have faith. Your timing is perfect.  What You say, You will do.

We trust You, Lord!  We believe that, even now, Your seeds of promise are growing beneath the surface, and when they come into bloom, their beauty will be more than worth the wait.  In Jesus’ Name ❤️
